Short answer: Seven fleets entered the Warpstorm and never returned as themselves: a colonisation convoy that aged backwards, a salvage armada found rusted shut, a pilgrim fleet whose only transmission now loops forever at the storm’s edge. These are short, atmospheric stories from the dark side of our original sci-fi universe.
Warpstorm is an original fictional universe. All expeditions below are fiction. Not affiliated with any other sci-fi franchise.
1. The Provision Convoy Halcyon Grace
Eleven colony ships, escorted, fully provisioned, left the Meridian Yards for the outer rim. They entered the storm corridor on schedule. Nineteen hours later, the Halcyon Grace emerged — alone, intact, and eleven years older than its departure date. Its crew of 4,000 had become 612. The survivors remembered a crossing that “took a while.” The colony fleet behind them was never found.
2. The Salvage Armada Iron Tithe
Eight salvage vessels answered a ghost-ship distress call inside the storm. A patrol found the armada four months later, all eight hulls fused nose-to-stern in a single chain, every airlock welded from the inside. No bodies. The salvage in their holds was logged as complete — cargo that no registry has ever matched.
3. The Pilgrim Fleet Voice of the Deep
Three thousand faithful follow a signal they believe comes from beyond the storm’s heart. Every year they sail one wave closer. Every year their transmission repeats, unchanged, on the same frequency: “We are almost there. We are almost there. We are almost there.” The signal predates the fleet by two centuries.
4. The Charting Mission Cartographer’s Oath
The Oath’s mission was to map the storm’s interior for the first time in a generation. Its final log entry — verified authentic — reads: “Chart complete. Do not use. Do not use. The routes are alive. Do not—”
The chart was transmitted, in full, to fleet command. It is accurate. It is complete. Every navigator who has followed it has been lost.
5. The Dredger Marrow Sun
A mining dredger harvesting storm-metal from a wreck field reported impossible yields — ore that continued humming after extraction. On the final day of contact, its captain transmitted a single image: the dredger’s own hull, photographed from the outside, rusted beyond recognition, while the crew was still alive inside it.
6. The Escort Squadron Nine Lanterns
Nine warships escorted a courier through a surge. Eight emerged. The ninth — the Lantern Vigil — continues to appear on every subsequent expedition’s sensors, always ahead of the fleet, always escorting, never answering hails. Veterans refuse to acknowledge it. It has been seen for forty years.
7. The Returned Second Dawn
The only expedition to return changed but alive. The crew stepped out of the airlock, reported an uneventful crossing, and requested their pay. They had been gone eighty years. They had not aged. They all — every member, independently — request the same posting: back into the storm. Fleet command has denied all of them. Twice.
