Short answer: Crossing the galaxy means diving beneath reality into the Empyrean — a dimension of raw energy where distance means nothing and direction means less. Ships ride unstable currents between beacons, and when the storm surges, those beacons fail. That’s when fleets are lost: some emerge decades later, empty and rusted, some never emerge at all.

Warpstorm is an original fictional universe, written as in-universe lore. Not affiliated with any other sci-fi franchise.

Navigating the Unpredictable Currents

No ship crosses the galaxy in normal space — the distances are simply too large. Instead, vessels dive into the Empyrean: a parallel dimension where physics is a suggestion and the currents of raw energy carry ships across whole sectors in days.

But the Empyrean has no straight lines. There are only currents — torrents of energy that shift without warning. Without instruments and trained navigators, a ship entering the deep is instantly lost in an infinite fog where every direction feels identical.

The Beacons That Guide Lost Vessels

Civilization survives warp travel through chains of beacons — vast, ancient stations that broadcast pulsing signals through the Empyrean like lighthouses through fog. A pilot who follows the pulses stays on a route.

In calm times, the network works. But the beacons predate every living crew, and nobody alive fully understands them. When the Warpstorm surges, its interference reaches across the void: signals weaken, routes drift, and ships that trusted the light find it pointing nowhere.

Catastrophic Storms and Ghost Ships

When a major storm front rolls through a travel lane, fleets vanish. What happens next follows a pattern every rim-child knows:

  • Some ships emerge decades later — completely intact, completely empty. No crew, no logs beyond contradictory entries, hulls draped in rust that took centuries to form
  • Some reappear with crews who insist they left yesterday, aged only days — while everyone they knew is gone
  • A few transmit for years from inside the storm, coordinates meaningless, before going silent
  • Most simply never return

Salvage crews call the returned hulks ghost ships and board them at double pay. The rust never comes off.
